Hyundai's Blue2 fuel-cell concept

Hydrogen-powered fuel-cell electric sedan comes with 90 kW (122 PS / 121 bhp) and a fuel-economy of 34.9 km/liter
Hyundai has introduced a new hydrogen fuel-cell concept car called the Blue2 at the 2011 Seoul Motor Show.
Also code-named the HDN-6, the Blue2 derives its name from a coupling of Blue Drive, Hyundai's green sub-brand, and H2, the symbol for hydrogen. The concept is Hyundai's attempt at getting ahead of its competitors in the race for hydrogen-powered electric vehicle technology. The Blue2 is meant to show the comfort and capabilities that a fuel-cell sedan can provide.
Powering the Blue2 is a 90 kW (122 PS / 121 bhp) fuel cell stack that delivers a mileage capability of 34.9 km/liter on the car. It comes with low roll-resistance tires and lightweight alloy wheels to bolster fuel-economy.
Design-wise, the car is very much a 'futuristic concept'. Rear-view cameras replace the side-mirrors and there's an automatic door opening system. The Blue2 comes with wider seats for easy access and exit and a some new technologies such as the Transparent Organic LED monitor on the center console which provides a more vivid display. There's also the Motion Sensor Moustick - a wheel and sensor that create a new way for the driver to more easily operate the infotainment system.

MX-5 GT debuts at Silverstone

Mazda's very own MiniHulk, the MX-5 GT, made its track debut over the weekend at the Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship.
A stripped-out, pumped-up racing roadster prepped by Jota Sport, the GT lasted the full three hours at Silverstone, and maintained second in class for most of the race before finishing sixth. Don't forget, it was up against contenders from Porsche, BMW and Lotus.
It boasts 275bhp from its 2.0-litre motor, hits 62mph from rest in just three seconds, tops out at 160mph and has a rigidity 17 times stronger than required by the FIA. Hulk Angry!

New Evoque: first drive

Can the new baby Range Rover trouble the BMW X3 or Audi Q5? Top Gear’s Paul Horrell finds out

Land Rover Evoque
This has been like some ridiculously drawn-out teenage tease. The first glimpse of the Evoque was July last year. It has been breathlessly revealing more of itself since then. Now, finally, there's been the first hurried physical contact behind the bike sheds. I got a drive of it.
As I say, though, it was just a quick furtle. The tease goes on for an agonisingly long time yet, as showroom cars won't be launched until summer. This wasn't a road test, but a short drive of prototypes on a test track.
See more pics of the Evoque prototype
That said, they were pretty finished prototypes, and the track was varied enough to yield useful information. Like: is the drive as good as the looks?
Yes.
The petrol will be the quickest powertrain. It's the 2.0 turbo direct-injection engine from the latest Mondeo, but powered up to 240 horses. It's re-engineered to allow the usual Range Rover off-roading ruggedness. It can still run when tipped at 45 degrees, or you're 50cm deep in water.
It gives the little Range Rover convincing acceleration and pick-up to the accelerator, with no lag. Most of the time it's quiet too.
It comes with a six-speed auto. But I'd be using the shift paddles. A lot. Left to its own devices, it doesn't seem to want to shift down until you floor it, and then it goes berserk. And to be honest, a four-cylinder is never as refined as the V8s Range Rover has got us used to.
I rather took to the 190bhp 2.2 diesel though. Again it isn't actually all that quiet. But there's willing torque over a wide rev range, it's easy to drive smoothly or briskly or both, and the standard manual six-speed works well. And in this form it's economical, with a sub-150g/km rating.
See pics of the Evoque during winter testing
Both the prototypes have the 4WD system, and so there's plenty of grip out of slow corners in the wet. The steering is sharp enough to dance cleanly round tight bends in a way you'd never associate with the words Range and Rover. But the whole rig feels stable on the straights too.
A quibble: the electric power steering has too much false self-centring if you switch the chassis to the dynamic mode. I think the development drivers agree with this, and they still have time to change it.
The ride has that lovely long-travel feel that makes the best SUVs so relaxing, but the brilliant thing is the way it's combined with car-like control. For this, a big shout to the MR adaptive damping system, which uses a more advanced version of the hardware in Ferraris. (Honestly - an extra set of magnets for faster response.) It tautens up to keep the body in check over big bumps and in hectic cornering, but loosens to allow the ride to stay cloud-soft the rest of the time. Harsh ridges and potholes are smothered with luxury-car quietness.
The Evoque shell feels strong and solid, and everything is well bolted to it. This seems, even at prototype stage, like a quality item. This matters. It's smaller and lower than a Q5 or X3 but it will cost as much, and those vehicles are granite-strong. The Evoque has to match them.
Besides which, the Evoque must feel expensive on the move, because it treats you to a proper luxury interior. The Q5 and X3 are just taller versions of very common (if excellent) Audi and BMW saloons. The Evoque is something different. It has the regal style and materials of a Range Rover, stylishly updated and re-booted for a new generation.
I wish they'd open the test-track's security barrier and let me go further.

240bhp electric bike set for Pikes Peak

Electric bike is most powerful to compete in famed American motorsports event

Chip Yates
Meet Chip Yates. Later on this year in June, this 39-year-old chap will contest the famous Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in something special. That something special is a 240bhp electric superbike.
Following the bike's debut in January this year - where he raced petrol-powered bikes and scored two podium finishes after just six laps of testing - Yates will contest this monstrous machine in the annual race to the clouds, in the Exhibition Division.
The superbike, the most powerful bike to compete at Pikes Peak, is powered by a liquid-cooled electric motor with 240bhp and 365lb ft of torque - more powerful than a MotoGP bike. Something certain to change the colour of Rossi's hair...
Says Chip: "Our engineers are busy developing new traction control software and mapping that will automatically adapt based on my position on the mountain."
While it won't be the first electric bike to race up the mountain, Chip reckons his bike will prove electricity isn't boring. "First, our superbike makes 240bhp at sea level and 240bhp at 14,110 feet. We don't suffer any power loss," says Chip.
"Secondly, our 365lb ft of torque is available from 0rpm as soon as I open the throttle."
The bike will undergo a two-day test ahead of the 26 June race. More on this as we get it...

2012 BMW 1-Series 5-door spied with less camo on the Nürburgring

This is the upcoming 2012 BMW 1-Series doing some final testing at the Nürburgring before its scheduled launch later this year.
The prototype spotted here is wearing less camo than in previous spy viewings and our spy photographers report the car was doing its fair share of laps as it readies itself for production.
This next-generation 1-Series looks more upright than the current model (X1-like) and we can expected it to be larger too, as BMW makes room for entry-level vehicles below the 1er in the product lineup. The prototypes we've seen appear longer and show a slighter C-pillar, likely to improve rear visibility.
The next-generation 2012 BMW 1-Series is set for launch sometime later this year.

Video: 230mph Corvette crash

Hinson Motorsports releases footage of twin-turbo Chevy crashing at the Texas Mile...

Hinson Motorsports
American company Hinson Motorsports attempted to break its own record for the standing mile in a Corvette last weekend at the Texas Mile.
FYI, that record was 224mph. They tried to go for a 230+mph run when something went horribly wrong. Their modified Corvette - packing a faintly ludicrous 1,738bhp - got airborne into its record-breaking attempt and came to a rest. Violently.
Using whatever luck was left in the universe, the driver managed to walk away unharmed, still unsure how he flipped dramatically. Watch the video below and then ask yourselves... how?

VW Race Touareg 3: a desert racer for the road

Volkswagen’s Race Touareg 3 concept

Look what blew in from the desert. This is VW’s Race Touareg 3 concept, based on the endurance monster that took the top three places in this year’s Dakar rally - the two-week race that’s now run across Argentina and Chile’s roughest landscapes. And as you’ve probably guessed, this isn’t some regular showroom-spec Touareg with the body of a real Dakar winner. This is a real Dakar winner, albeit a slightly cosier one, reformatted for us regular civvies.

This feature was originally published in the March issue of Top Gear magazine
Volkswagen’s Race Touareg 3 concept
Like the competition version, it's fully road legal, but thanks to some soundproofing, and a new interior with lots of leather and silver stitching on the seats, you might actually consider using it as a daily driver. Maybe. It'd look good in the office car park, that's for sure. Volkswagen’s Race Touareg 3 concept

But don't let a few home comforts fool you. It still has a full roll cage and deep bucket seats, and, mechanically, it's undiluted from the dune-jumping original. It uses the same 2.5-litre, five-cylinder twin-turbo diesel engine with 305bhp that gets it from 0-62mph in 5.9 seconds. The spaceframe chassis is made from aircraft-grade steel and the suspension and brakes are identical to those on the race car, with double-wishbones and two shocks per wheel.
Save for a slightly different gearlever on the five-speed sequential 'box, the drivetrain is exactly the same. In other words, this thing can smash across boulders the size of small asteroids and nothing will fall off. And if it can handle thousands of miles of maximum-speed blasts - only 118mph, thanks to close gearing - across sky-high dunes, it'll probably cope fine over some potholes in Bridlington.
Volkswagen’s Race Touareg 3 concept
There are two concessions to bling: the racing decals have gone and it's now painted in ‘Magic Morning' white - infused with a shimmer of gold - and it has 18-inch gold rims designed by BBS, which replace the 16-inch race versions. The bodywork is still made from lightweight carbon composite and it keeps 95 per cent of the racecar's shape. Two metres wide, high-riding and with short overhangs, it's designed to sail over the sort of terrain that'd knock the wind out of a Land Rover. That is, provided you can squeeze in through the tiny door hatches that look like entrances to a space capsule.Volkswagen’s Race Touareg 3 concept
So why has Volkswagen made it? For the same reason Porsche makes a GT3 RS, or Subaru makes an Impreza STI: to celebrate motorsport goodness with something similar for the road. Volkswagen doesn't do F1, or rallying, or Le Mans, but it does dominate Dakar and this is how the marketing people want to remind us. The only difference is that this Race Touareg isn't just some hardcore homage to the real thing, but a mechanical duplicate. With posher seats and a stereo.Volkswagen’s Race Touareg 3 concept
There's just one small, slightly frustrating thing: it hasn't been officially confirmed for production. But if you surprise your local Volkswagen dealer with an offer he can't refuse, you never know what might happen. Of course, taking it for a Sunday drive here in the UK might be slight overkill, like going green laning in a Chieftain. It would make more sense somewhere sandy.Volkswagen’s Race Touareg 3 concept

Which is why VW showed it at the Qatar motor show earlier this year - dipping its toe into the oasis to gauge reaction (this Touareg shared the stand with another one, based on the regular road car and featuring 24-carat gold trim). If it does go on sale, the Middle East is the sort of place where it's likely to find a home, probably with a petrolhead sheikh who's got a hundred-ish grand to spend on a posh dune buggy to go shopping in. Or perhaps in Africa, with a playboy prince whose backyard includes a few hundred acres of Sahara.
For that to happen, all it needs is a suitcase full of cash and some persuasive words. Only then will this mirage become a reality.
