2012 Mercedes SL spied near the Nürburgring

With summer fast approaching, Mercedes has returned to Germany to continue testing the 2012 SL.

Spied near the Nürburgring, the prototype reveals the redesigned model will retain the SL's classic proportions and folding-metal roof. More specifically, the front features a long bonnet, an SLS-inspired grille, and LED-infused headlights. Out back, there's a dual exhaust system, a distinctively-shaped trunk, and LED tail lamps.

Under the hood, engine options will likely include a 3.5-liter V6 with 306 PS (225 kW / 302 hp) and 368 Nm (272 lb-ft) of torque as well as a twin-turbo 4.6-liter V8 that develops 435 PS (320 kW / 429 hp) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque. If that's not good enough, the SL63 AMG is slated to use the twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 that produces 544 PS (400 kW / 536 hp) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque.

The 2012 Mercedes SL will be launched sometime next year, so stay tuned.
