Mercedes C63 AMG Black Series spied

Mule for lighter and faster version of the C63 AMG Coupe spotted out in the open.

Mercedes is in the black! This pumped up C-Class is proof that a lighter, faster and meaner-looking C63 AMG Black Series is on the way, as we revealed back in October last year. But don't be fooled by the saloon bodystyle on this mule, it's only the recently unveiled three-door coupe that will be receiving the Black Series treatment.

The pre-facelift saloon bodyshell is simply a distraction, hiding the more powerful powertrain underneath. The wheel arches have also been extended to accomodate a wider track front and rear. When the finished article finally appears, it will be clothed in carbon-fibre body panels, to help slash the kerbweight by around 100kg.

Under the bonnet will be the same 6.3-litre V8 as the standard car, but boosted to 513bhp - the same output as the C63 DR520 special edition. With less weight though performance should be sensational, making this car marginally faster than its successor, the CLK Black Series from 2008, a car capable of covering 0-62mph in 4.3 seconds.

Although the engine shares much of its internals with the SLS AMG supercar, the Black Series coupe will stick with the seven-speed Sportshift gearbox, not the heavier twin-clutch 'box. Expect it to be priced above the £100,000 mark, providing a direct rival to the BMW M3 GTS.
